The Yamazaki
Single Cask Single
Malt Whisky
Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2016 is making the media is go nuts! The world famous bottle was released on Monday, February 1, 2016, and people are, in one word, ecstatic! The 2013 bottle made headlines in the press in early 2015 when it was selected by Jim Murray’s The Whisky Bible as the ‘World Whisky of the Year’, and consequently sold out exceptionally fast.
In total, 5000 bottles were produced of the 2016 version. Bottled at 48%, the difference between this and the 2013 version is mainly the fact that the youngest whisky in the blend has been aged for two more years, and that’s never hurt a blend thus far! Grab it while it’s still here.
The Yamazaki Sherry Cask release stands at the top end of Yamazaki’s line of Japanese Single Malts, ahead of Yamazaki 18 Year Old while remaining more reasonably priced than the elusive Yamazaki 50 Year Old release.
The fact that there’s no age statement on this hotly anticipated Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2016 does not matter one bit; the bottling is truly exceptional. The 2016 release largely consists of the 2013 blend with two more years of aging, as well as some other choice malts aged up to 25 years. The blend is married in casks that previously held Olorso sherry for three years, bringing forth distinctive notes of raisins, clove and chocolate, cut with a slight bitterness.
Japanese Whisky is much similar to Scotch, so it is quite similar to Scottish single malts aged in sherry casks. But even at a robust 96 proof, the Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2016 remains elegant and refined. Sherry Cask 2016 is a challenging dram, revealing different flavors with each sip, from sweet fruit to hints of smoke to tart acidity.
